Design Intent
Basic Concepts
- create robust sketches that are intelligent and flexible
- communicate the design
- enable future modifications
- group your sketches so they make sense, that is don't put everything into the same sketch
- define the key elements of the design
- constrain your sketch
- add relationships to help with future modifications
- think about what's known and unknown
- indicate how the features are related to each other
- what dimensions do you want to show up on a drawing? Which ones will be inspection dimensions?
- add design intent as you model the part. Don't add it to a drawing later.
- add the design intent via sketches, relations, link values, equations
- design intent determines how parts changes if dimensions or relations are modified
Design Intent Examples for Sketches
- center holes of features share a common centerpoint
- centers of the arcs line up vertically
- circular profile in center on that feature
- features are centered along an axis
- holes are equal diameter
- holes in pattern are equally spaced
- larger arc is centered with respect to model origin
- radii are not equal and can change to any value
- slot is centered on edge
... for Parts
- all holes are through holes
- first and last hole are spaced equal distances from end of part
- front holes are on the centerline
- hole is concentric to boss
- holes are concentric to circular edges created by fillets and rounds
- holes for bolts and pipe pass through flange and wall thickness
- holes in base are symmetrical
- holes in the tabs are all equal
- number of holes in pattern increases from 2 to 4
- position and number of holes across width of plate doesn't change
- spacing between holes in pattern is equal
- ----------
- all chamfers are x.x by x.x
- all fillets and rounds are 0.xx
- fillet radii for part is x mm
- fillets are all equal
- fillets are all equal at radius x
- ----------
- metal thickness is constant
- shell is 1.25 mm thick
- thickness of part is equal on both side of parting line
- thicknesses of bosses are equal
- wall thickness is constant
- ----------
- excluding x, part is symmetrical about two planes
- part is symmetric with respect to longitudinal centerline
- part is symmetric with respect to parting plane
- part is symmetrical
- ----------
- draft angle is equal on both sides of parting plane
- intermediate sections consist of four symmetrical lines
- length of section is determined using existing locations
- overall length of the part increases to xx
- ----------
- boss is centered on rounded end of base
- bow comes to a point
- center of rim of wheel lies at end of spokes
- hull transitions from sharp corners to a continuous smooth surface
- ribs are equally spaced
- slot is aligned with tab
- spokes must be evenly spaced
- spokes pass through center of hub
- surface is smooth
- tabs are all equal size and shape
- transom is a single smooth spline
... for Assemblies
- countersink holes are added to part 1 and part 2
- flange on part is used to create extruded shape of corresponding flange with 3 degree draft
- must have at least 0.625 in engagement depth
- new feature is to be an extension of the current shaft
- new feature must be coradial with a mating D keyway
- part is placed within cutout, tangent to bottom and centered
- part must relate to inner contour of second part
- part must relate to outer diameter of other part
- top part fits tightly into top of second part. Its top is flush with top of third part.
